Pensylvannia, USA
PALTIN International Inc. participated at the 8th Annual Farm Field Day
at Cedar Meadow Farm, Holtwood Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with a
technical exhibit and demonstrated in the field the use of real-time
soil water profile probes and ETgage simulators for improving drip
irrigation scheduling under no-till tomato production. The event was
hosted by Steve Groff, Cedar Meadow Farm, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on
July 25, 2001.

"Beyond Conservation - Exploring the Soil Food Web"
Lancaster, Pennsylvania (June 22, 2001)
Lancaster County may be synonymous with farm production, but did you
know some of today's most innovative and groundbreaking conservation and
soil management strategies are developed right here on local farms? Each
year, nationally-recognized agriculture expert Steve Groff hosts Farm
Field Day, a free, all-day educational event devoted to sharing these
techniques with the public.
The 8th Annual Farm Field Day will be held on Wednesday, July 25 at
Cedar Meadow Farm from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year's theme is Beyond
Conservation - Exploring the Soil Food Web. A number of local and
national agriculture experts will demonstrate the latest farming
techniques, including the debut of groundbreaking aerial photography
techniques using remote helicopters. The event is co-sponsored The
Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Lancaster County
Conservation District.
Groff's efforts to implement environmentally-sound farming practices
continue to attract local and national recognition and media attention.
In April 1999, Cedar Meadow Farm was featured in a three-part
mini-series, "Journey to Planet Earth," a national PBS broadcast. Just
this year, Groff earned the PA Sustainable Agriculture Leadership Award.
Groff was also selected as the 1999 National No-Till Innovator of the
Year.
The day will be highlighted by the unveiling of a unique pilot project
that utilizes wireless remote control helicopters and parafoils to shoot
images of crops, fields and farms. This aerial video photography can be
used to detect the specific location of crop stress, insect infestations
and nutrient deficiencies. This technology will enable farmers to treat
these affected areas, rather than the entire field. Bolar Heli Systems
(Allentown, PA) and Nutrient Solutions in Agriculture, Inc. (Palmyra,
PA) will conduct this exciting demonstration.
This year's learning stations will feature a variety of fascinating
demonstrations: Don Reicosky, USDA-ARS Morris MN, will present
information on how tillage affects soil organic matter and carbon
sequestration, which is becoming a national political issue. Andrew
Sharply, USDA-ARS, will demonstrate the rainfall simulator to determine
soil erosion rates and phosphorus runoff. Sharply will also discuss the
region's excess phosphorus issue and how research is determining ways to
manage it. Mark Goodson, PSU Extension, will demonstrate the dynamics of
living organisms in this year's soil pit. Goodson will discuss how the
roles of these living organisms impact soil management strategies and
explain the concept of the soil food web. Dana Ashford, USDA-ARS will
share her research on the effects of rolling cover crops. She is from
Auburn, AL and has studied the successes of South American farmers cover
crop management. Ken Hargesheimer, Minifarms Network, Lubbock TX. Ken
has taught minifarming to groups around the globe. He will be discussing
small-scale no-till methods and equipment. Ioan Paltineanu, Paltin
International.
Real time soil moisture monitoring for irrigation scheduling is being
conducted at Cedar Meadow Farm. A backhoe excavation will be conducted
immediately following deep tillage passes to determine the effectiveness
of each type of deep tillage tool. A number of agri-businesses will be
on hand to demonstrate the industry's latest equipment. Fiber Crops,
No-Tilled Vegetables and planting equipment.
Children won't want to miss an educational adventure with local
naturalist Chotty Sprenkle as she takes them on a stream
exploration.Kids can also crawl through an earthworm tunnel and assemble
soil tubes to create a soil profile.
Mouth watering roasted sweet corn, watermelon, home-made ice cream, and
other refreshments will be available for purchase.
Partial funding for the 8th Annual Farm Field Day has been made possible
through a grant from the Northeast Region of the USDA Sustainable
Agriculture Research and Education Program (USDA - SARE).
Cedar Meadow Farm is located at 679 Hilldale Road in Holtwood. For more
